Smart Tachograph 2 in the UK
Current 2026 regulations, requirements, and implementation dates for Smart Tachograph 2 systems
Last updated: September 2026 | Authority: GOV.UK DVSA Guidance
This guide reflects current DVSA/GOV.UK requirements as of September 2026. Tachograph regulations can change. Always verify current requirements with GOV.UK or consult a professional adviser before purchasing or installing equipment.
What Is Smart Tachograph 2?
Smart Tachograph 2 is the fourth tachograph generation, following analogue, digital and Smart Tachograph 1. It introduces updated interoperability and security requirements for the operations to which the rules apply.
- • Updated interoperability and security features
- • Enhanced security features against data tampering and fraud
- • Recording functions specified in the applicable tachograph rules
- • Compatibility requirements for the relevant vehicle and tachograph cards
Current UK/International Regulations (September 2026)
Key dates from GOV.UK
- 21 February 2024: newly registered in-scope vehicles must have a full or transitional Smart Tachograph 2, regardless of journey type.
- 24 December 2025: newly registered goods vehicles that require a tachograph must have a full Smart Tachograph 2.
- 1 July 2026: a full Smart Tachograph 2 is required for goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes used for international journeys for hire and reward.
International journeys from 1 July 2026
The 1 July 2026 rule concerns goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes used for international journeys for hire and reward. GOV.UK also states that a tachograph is not required under this provision where the international journey is for the driver's or company's own account and driving is not the driver's main activity. Check the full guidance for the operation, vehicle and any applicable exemption.
UK-only operation and replacements
For UK-only operation where applicable, GOV.UK states that an original analogue or digital tachograph can continue to be used, and a faulty analogue or digital unit can be replaced like-for-like or with a later type. An original Smart Tachograph 1 can also continue on UK-only operation; a faulty Smart Tachograph 1 must be replaced with a full or transitional Smart Tachograph 2. Goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes but under 3.5 tonnes used only in the UK do not have to be fitted with a tachograph under the 1 July 2026 rule.
Tachograph Technology Generations
| Type | Technology | Current UK Status (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Analogue | Chart-based mechanical recording | Can remain in use for applicable UK-only operations |
| Digital (1st Gen) | Electronic, driver card, memory card storage | Legal for domestic UK and replacement |
| Smart Tachograph 1 | Digital + basic positioning | Can remain in use for applicable UK-only operations |
| Smart Tachograph 2 | GNSS position + enhanced security | Required in the circumstances and dates set out above |
Do I Need to Upgrade?
Domestic-only UK operators with existing digital systems:
An original analogue, digital or Smart Tachograph 1 can remain in use where the UK-only provisions apply.
International haulage operators (post 1 July 2026):
For goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes used internationally for hire and reward, check whether the full Smart Tachograph 2 requirement applies.
New vehicle registrations:
From 24 December 2025, newly registered goods vehicles requiring a tachograph need a full Smart Tachograph 2.
Faulty/failed existing system:
A faulty analogue or digital unit can be replaced like-for-like or with a later type. A faulty Smart Tachograph 1 must be replaced by a full or transitional Smart Tachograph 2.
Data downloads and records
Follow the tachograph and data-protection rules for your operation. GOV.UK says operators should download vehicle-unit data every 90 days and driver-card data every 28 days. These intervals tell you how often to download, not how much data a unit stores.
- • Keep and download data in accordance with the rules that apply to your operation.
- • A tachograph is not a live fleet-tracking system.
Installation & Cost Considerations
Smart Tachograph 2 costs vary by vehicle, unit and installation requirements. If you're unsure whether your vehicle requires Smart 2, contact us with the registration, vehicle details and type of operation.
- • Send the model of your existing tachograph.
- • Include the vehicle make, model, voltage and weight.
- • Tell us where the vehicle operates.
- • Say whether you need supply only or installation.
- • Ask for a quote covering the unit, fitting and calibration you need.
Tachographs used for recording drivers' hours must be properly installed, calibrated and sealed by a vehicle manufacturer or an Approved Tachograph Centre, as applicable.
For North Wales installation or calibration enquiries, contact our Approved Tachograph Centre in Mostyn.
Check the rules for your operation
This is general guidance. The requirements depend on your vehicle, journeys and type of operation. Check the current GOV.UK/DVSA rules before buying or fitting equipment. If you're unsure, ask an Approved Tachograph Centre or a qualified adviser about your vehicle.
